AN ORIGIN STORY IN EVERY CUP

Your love of coffee encompasses many separate elements. It starts with the natural elements: wind, rain, sun, shade, altitude, the earth, and its minerals. Specialty coffee farmers harness these elements to cultivate the perfect coffee bean. We continue their craft by curating and roasting each harvest, bringing the fresh flavors, aromas, and textures of the natural world to your coffee cup.

Now, what if there was a way you could drink coffee all day long, and into the evening? At Blackwoods Coffee, our in-house aficionados and Curators have made this reality possible, creating what we affectionately call “A Coffee Lover’s Prescription for Drinking Coffee All Day, and into the Evening”. But before we get into it, let us first share some important information concerning your coffee and the caffeine found within.

Drinking Coffee

Did you know that according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 64 percent of Americans over the age of 18 drink—on average—3.1 eight-ounce cups of coffee per day? That’s roughly 400 million cups of coffee per day and more than 140 billion cups per year nationwide.

You might be wondering, what impact does all this coffee have on the some 150 million coffee drinkers in America? While rumors might have it that coffee can work against your well-being, believe it or not, there’s actually a long list of science-based health benefits that can be found in your morning, afternoon, and evening cup. Here’s a quick snapshot:

  • Rich in antioxidants, coffee drinkers may have a lower chance of developing certain diseases such as type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, stroke, as well as liver and colorectal cancers to name a few.
  • Caffeine is associated with positive brain functionality,
including alertness, concentration, memory retention, and mood stabilization.
  • All-natural caffeine works to improve physical performance in aerobics and endurance sports while reducing fatigue and pain.
  • Caffeine can boost your metabolic rate by 3-11%, making it one of the few natural substances proven to aid the fat-burning process.
  • Coffee beans are full of important nutrients, including
    Riboflavin, Pantothenic acid, manganese, potassium,
    magnesium, and niacin.

Helping the Habit

It’s true that millions of Americans have developed a habit of drinking coffee daily. For many, it’s the first thing that comes to mind each morning; the motivating force that drives people out of bed. However, while coffee can be a useful tool to start your day, it’s important to understand the chemistry behind it before indulging your habit first thing in the morning.

During our body’s awakening process, our pituitary glands signal the adrenal gland to produce a stress hormone known as “cortisol”. This fancy word plays a big role in regulating things such as your body’s metabolism and immune response. When we wake up, however, these cortisol levels are at their peak, preventing all the good, stimulating effects of our morning cup—aside from the one that alleviates our caffeine addiction. When we entertain our coffee craving before rubbing the sleep from our eyes, that caffeine boost we know and love will be greatly diminished. A common rule of thumb is to wait about an hour or so after getting out of bed to drink your first cup.

Likewise, during the workday, our brains experience increased neural activity, resulting in the buildup of a compound called “adenosine”. This molecular blend of adenine and ribose causes our brains to slow down, leading to that infamous grogginess, lethargy, and brain fog we may experience throughout the day. To top it off, the inevitable midday crash after an afternoon meal or snack causes our energy levels to drop even further, making it difficult to remain focused.

Drinking a cup of coffee about 30 minutes prior to this anticipated crash—or having a cup of Espresso with, or at the end of lunch—may prevent or at least reduce the afternoon energy slump. Espresso is comparable to about a half cup of coffee, which makes it a great source for maintaining a consistent energy level; giving you around two hours of focused energy.

Drawing from this science-based coffee caffeine information, we can work to develop a tailored coffee prescription that satisfies your unique habit while keeping you energized throughout the day.
